Isle of Enchantments, opened for business in October of 2010. Her shop, located in New York, currently offers shipping to the United States and Canada. Among a large array of products available, Isle of Enchantments also offers many unique, hand-crafted items from Artisans in Kenya through Fair Trade partnership. Fair Trade supports communities and allows otherwise disadvantaged workers the chance to survive (meals, education, medical care, etc) while providing exquisite, culturally-diverse products for consumers.
Me: Shawna, thank you for helping me celebrate this milestone for Pagan by Design! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Is there a story behind the birth of Isle of Enchantments?
Shawna: Thank you! I’m happy to be a part of your celebration, your blog is wonderful!
Let’s see, a little about me. Well, I am a wife, mother to an adult daughter and two fabulous furbabies, and a (primarily) solitary Wiccan practitioner. I’m famous...or perhaps infamous, among family and friends for being somewhat unconventional, and a bit silly. I think enjoying life as well as living a life that reflects and upholds what you believe are very important. Isle of Enchantments was born partly from this. I have always worked for someone else, which is fine, most people do. However, I was becoming increasingly dissatisfied, mainly because I wanted my work life to reflect who I am as a human being. I wanted the company I poured my heart and soul into to be working to uphold values I could believe in 110%, and *poof* the notion of an online shop that provides spiritual, and fun products for individuals, regardless of their spiritual path entered my mind, manifested into Isle of Enchantments. I’ve always been big on equality, and I strongly believe that to understand and accept one another for our differences is the key to Peace. Not just in our home, at work and in our communities, but globally. That is why I have also included a Multicultural Celebration Calendar to the shop. It is being filled with information about religious and secular holidays from around the world. My hope is that people will not only visit us to shop, but that they will also check out the calendar, and perhaps leave knowing something they didn’t before they came.
Me: One of the things that really draws me to your store is the fact that you participate in Fair Trade. What are the main reasons you chose to support Fair Trade with Isle of Enchantments?
Shawna: There are so many communities throughout the world that are struggling. Fair Trade initiatives allow the members of the communities they serve to be active participants in their own economic growth. They are truly given a hand up, not a hand out. They create beautifully crafted products, some learn bookkeeping skills, and computer skills. The Starfish program in China, works to save girls and young women from sex trafficking. These girls are given shelter, counseling, and medical care while being taught the trade of jewelry making, so they have the means to earn a sustainable living. Many programs utilize recycled materials such as Rubber Tires, Inner tubes, Plastic Bags, and Steel Oil Drums to create breathtaking products out of things that would otherwise be poisoning the planet.
By supporting Fair Trade, Isle of Enchantments is able to provide an assortment of unique, hand crafted merchandise to our customers, and together we can do our part to help lessen the struggles of others and help clean up the planet.
Me: I've noticed that you offer a Virtual Fair Trade Day Celebration each May. Can you tell us a bit about that?
Shawna: Yes! World Fair Trade Day (WFTD) occurs once a year in May. Communities, businesses and Fair Trade organizations around the world hold events in the days leading up to, and including, WFTD to help educate the public about Fair Trade and to showcase products, as well as the Artisans who create them. I wanted so much for Isle of Enchantments to participate in this important occasion, but wasn’t sure how to go about it, since we are a strictly online venue. Then it occurred to me that I could create a “Virtual Fair Ground” that has information about Fair Trade, videos about some of the producers, and recipes that use Fair Trade ingredients. To celebrate, and engage participation in the event, I utilized Facebook and Twitter to conduct a 2-day Virtual Scavenger Hunt in which participants would have to complete certain tasks, answer Fair Trade Related Questions, etc. There were prizes including Fair Trade Coffee, and other products. We also gave away a bag of Fair Trade Coffee with every purchase of $50 or more. We also had a virtual attendance sheet on the main Fair Grounds page. Anyone who signed in, received a personalized “Virtual Sticker” that proclaimed that they had been a participant. The event was a huge success, and even though I had planned on taking down the Fair Grounds until next year, I had many requests to keep it up all year, so I have left it visible. I can’t wait for next year, it’s such a fun event, and brings awareness to an incredible movement.
Me: Are there any future plans to expand product shipping beyond the United States and Canada?
Shawna: Actually, we have just begun shipping Internationally!! There are still some products that are only able to be shipped to US addresses (Due to restrictions from a particular supplier), but the majority of items are now able to be shipped practically anywhere!
Me: Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers?
Shawna: I’m in the process of making some hand crafted items of my own to add to the shop. Right now I am finishing up some wooden pendulum mats (there’s a pic of the “in progress” mats on our facebook wall), as well as a few trinket boxes made to resemble a Book of Shadows. I’m sure there will be more things, as time and my imagination will allow. The line of “Pixie Created” items will be called “Visions by Isleen” (Isleen being my Craft name, as well as the name of my alter ego and IOE’s Pixie Mascot). Each participant can get up to 7 Enchanting Entries!
